Selling Community Through Design

Community Design Liberty Shirts Social Impact Startup Weekend Yankton

Communi-Tee was created on March 31st, 2017 at Startup Weekend in Yankton, SD.

Over the course of a weekend (54 hours) attendees pitch ideas, form a team, and present their idea in front of a panel of judges with the goal that by the end of the weekend they will have created a fully operational startup.

Each team tries to figure out a problem that they want to solve with their company.  The problem our company is trying to solve is that quality locally designed shirts that represent the community people travel to, currently live, or lived in the past are hard to find. The solution to this problem was to find local designers, pay for the designs, and give back some of the money to a non-profit or organization in the community.

Our team consisted of 3 high school students: Kayl and Adam from Liberty, MO and Blake from Yankton, SD.  Along with 4 working professionals from Yankton, SD: Brittany, Donald, Ryan, and Chad. We will have future write-ups of our team in the near future.

After the long, exciting, and exhausting weekend we managed to win first place. Our prizes for winning first place consist of a yearlong membership to The Sandbox (a co-working space in Yankton), the opportunity to pitch our business to Two Bridges Capital, legal services from Shelia at JMWWH attorneys, and a marketing consultation from Twist of Pine.

Since the weekend has ended we continue to work on the idea, our business model, and get feedback from the two communities with which we are working. We believe that we can make a big impact by selling community through design and look forward to making a difference one locally designed shirt at a time.
